With the second generation of the automower line, husqvarna wisely introduced a very clear naming convention.
The first digit of the threedigit model number indicates the generation, while the last two gives a clue about the area the robot can cover.
Husqvarna seems to have ditched the letters from the model number, suggesting that now all robots will come with some sort of automatic charging.
The automower story originally started 16 years ago at electrolux, the parent company of husqvarna.
The original auto mower was replaced with the second generation of mowers in 2003.
The second generation brought the guide wire support and the radio frequency searching used during docking.
The second generation became a full lineup, supporting lawns from 500 sqm to 6000 sqm.
The third generation brings a radically new design and a new liion battery technology to the automower lineup, but the cutting technology has been more or less the same during the 16 years.
Creating a robot that can autonomously mow the lawn is not easy.
First of all, the device has to know where to and where not to mow.
It has to be prepared for obstacles, different garden shapes and complexities, and it must be safe to operate for ordinary people.
It cannot slip when the grass is wet, and it is not acceptable if the mower gets stuck.
As with most robots, it should go back to its dock when recharging is needed and, of course, it must be able to cut the grass without flattening it.
While inside the house robots can go from wall to wall and bounce back from obstacles, the backyard is a totally different environment.
Most of the robots solve the abovementioned problems with a sophisticated software that relies on a bunch of sensors and a perimeter wire.
As with most of the robot mowers, husqvarna automower 305 is using a perimeter wire to identify the lawn.
The robot knows exactly if it is in or out of the loop, making it very safe to operate.
Just like its predecessors, the whole body acts as a collision sensor.
When the outer shell moves on the main robot unit, the robot knows it hit something on the front, on the back, or on the sides.
To find the docking station, the robot uses a guide wire to shorten the searching process.
Navigation in the garden is not systematic.
The husqvarna automower 305 bounces between the different sections of the perimeter wire and the obstacles, selecting a seemingly random direction at each bounce.
No robotic mower to date is able to cut the lawn in nice clean stripes as a human would.
