Learning how to install carpet is not hard, but there are a few steps that you need to take in order to make sure that your carpet installation is a lasting success.
The first thing you need to do is make sure that your flooring is prepared.
Carpeting needs a hard subfloor to be installed on.
Carpeting can be installed over most types of subflooring.
Make sure your subflooring will keep moisture from coming into contact with the carpet.
This can be especially important if you are installing carpet in a basement.
Subflooring for carpeting needs to be something that can easily have the underlay stapled to it.
The next step is to get your installation equipment together.
You will also need a stair tool.
Seam tape and a seam iron will help you join pieces of carpet together invisibly, which is the mark of a truly expert carpet installation.
Your first step, after getting your subfloor is in place is to remove any debris or objects which might be painful or uncomfortable to step on.
Tacks and nails have a way of working their way up through carpeting so make sure that everything is smooth and clean under the carpeting.
After you have done this, put the tackless strips at the edges of the room and lay the underlay.
You need to position them about a half inch from the walls and lay them so that the tacks face the walls.
The only areas that will not have tackless strips placed in them are doorways.
You should lay the underlay in strips.
Make sure you have trimmed the excess.
The underlay should be butted up against itself at the edges but you need to make sure it is not overlapping or bunched up.
A trimming tool can come in handy to make sure that the fit is nice and tight.
Make sure that the underlay is not covering the tackless strips.
Use a stapler to attach the underlay to the subflooring.
Once the underlay is positioned and secured, you can begin to measure and lay your carpet.
The first measurement you should take is the longest part of your room.
Measure twice cut once applies to working with carpeting as well as with wood.
You need to make sure that when you are measuring the longest point in your room, you add at least four inches to that measurement.
Marking the carpet is critical.
You will use your chalk line at this point to lay out the cut lines that you will make.
After your carpeting has been marked, you will then cut it with the carpet knife.
Cutting the carpeting from the back will make it easier for you to follow the cut lines.
Keep in mind that the backing on the carpet can be quite tough and durable, so make sure your knife is sharp.
At this point you want to bring the carpet into the room and do a test fit in order to make sure that you have cut properly.
If your room is large, you will need to make sure that you cut a second piece of carpet according to the same measurements.
Make sure you pay attention to any patterns and repeats.
Overlap the pieces of carpet, then cut through both layers with the seam cutter so your edges line up perfectly.
Join the two with a piece of seaming tape placed underneath.
A seam iron is used at this point to activate the adhesive in the tape and cause the pieces to stick together.
You will use the knee kicker to attach the carpet to the tackless strips.
Use your knee on the kicker to firmly press the carpet onto the tackless strips.
The edge trimmer will be used at this point to trim the carpet at the wall.
The other side of the carpeting should be attached to the tackless strips.
Use the power stretcher to bring the carpet over on top of the tackless strip and attach it.
A stair tool can be used at this point to tuck and under any baseboards.
After you install carpet and those steps are complete you can sit back and enjoy your new wall to wall carpeting and feel that you have accomplished something by installing it yourself.
