Last night i rode him bareback with a halter.
He was fine at a trot but when i went into a canter he tucked his head and he rounded himself and tried to buck.
I pulled his head up and circled him and made him do it again without bucking.
He does this everytime i ride him bareback.
What should i do?
When i first bought my horse, i had the exact same issue you are having.
My trainer gave me the advice of lunging my horse before i ride him to get the energy out of him.
Lunging before riding is a good idea for any younger or more energetic horse.
By doing this you will get some of his excess energy out of him, because my guess is that your horse is just letting out his bottled up energy.
The animal learns that everytime it exhibits bad behavior, such as your horse bucking while riding, the straps will yank down on the horses head restricting his head movement.
Immediately after lunging, hop on the horse and start with a walk then a trot.
When comfortable gently ease into a canter.
I would recomment not cantering while on his back the first couple days after lunging, but only walk and trot.
After a couple days once he learns not to buck on the lunge line, ease into a canter.
By then he should know not to buck when you are on his back.
I used this with my 4 year old gelding and he learned within 3 days not to buck while on the lunge line.
I have not had one bucking instance in 2 years and i only lunge him every once in a while when he is energetic prior to riding.
